Comparison fo Cognitive Functions between Positive and Negative Schizophrenics

Abstract
Objective:
@EN The study was conducted in order to explore the nature of the cognitive dysfunction of schizophrenia and to examine the relationship between clinical characteristics of schizophrenia and cognitive functions.
@ES Method:
@EN Wisconsin and sorting test, visual continuous performance test. recognition memory test, spatial memory test, finger tapping test and KWIS-vocabulary test were given to 20 positive schizophrenics, 20 negative schizophrenics and 20 normal
controls.
The psychopathology of each schizophrenics was estimated with the PANSS.
@ES Results:
@EN 1) All the neuropsychological test results revealed significant differences among the three groups.
2) Negative schizophrenics performed significantly lower on the Wisconsin card sorting test than did members of two other groups, on the other hand, there was no significant difference between the positive schizophrenics and controls.
3) On the visual continuous performance, recognition memory, spatial memory, finger tapping and KWIS-vocabulary tests, the two schizophrenic groups, performed significantly lower than the control group.
4) The PANSS negative scores were found to be significantly correlated with performances on the Wisconsin card sorting test and the recognition memory test.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN The results suggest that cognitive function may be impaired in schizophrenia and that executive function may be more impaired in negative schizophrenia than positive schizophrenia. Therefore, we conclude that impaired cognitive function is
one
of
various manifestations of the neurobiology of schizophrenia.
